A group of people referred by Slough CTPLD (Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities) and supported by Real Time have produced a DVD to be used as a training and education resource. The project promoted a positive image of the participants who had the opportunity to develop their ideas and communicate them to other people.
As the project progressed, the video content was evaluated to ensure it met the needs of the group and was accessible and informative for the proposed audience. Professionals and local agencies were involved at every stage to ensure that the project met its targets in terms of the participants' involvement and the final DVD product.
The project provided participants with the opportunity to use video creatively to explore their ideas and communicate them to others. They developed confidence, interaction and cooperation skills in a positive environment.
They also gained the practical skills needed to make a video including planning, camerawork, interviewing, sound and other programme production skills. Above all the video project provided a structure for people to discuss the issues involved and develop a coherent response.
The final film includes interviews with doctors and discussion on best practice, combined with drama elements taking a light hearted look at some typical situations faced by people with learning disabilities when accessing healthcare.
